Has the place of women as and/or in art changed over time and across different media? Can a woman just be art? Drawing from her own experience as an artist whose “deceptively complex brand of feminism, expressed through the unashamed sexuality of her beautifully abstracted self portraits, makes her voice unique among new media artists" (ArtSlant, 2017), Schrager explores commercialism, sexuality, appropriation, celebrity culture, digital identity, and more through her conversations with some of the art world’s most compelling and controversial figures.

  • The Woman in White by Wilkie CollinsArts 2 Jan

Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White tells the story of two half-sisters, Laura Fairlie and Marian Halcombe who were embroiled in the sinister plot of Sir Percival Glyde and Count Fosco to take over their family’s wealth. It’s considered to be one of the first “sensation novels” to be published. Like most novels that fall into this category, the protagonists here are pushed to their limits by the villains before they finally got the justice they deserved.
The story begins with Walter Hartright helping a woman dressed in white who turned out to have escaped from a mental asylum. A day later, he travelled to Cumberland to be a drawing master to the half-sisters Laura Fairlie and Marian Halcombe. While he was in their house he discovered that the woman dressed in white whom he helped was also Laura’s sister.
Walter and Laura eventually became very close to each other and had a relationship, but Laura was already set to marry Sir Percival Glyde. Marian advised Walter to forget his love for Laura and live their place, a painful advice which he followed. Laura eventually married Glyde and this is when things started to turn for the worse for the main characters in the novel.
Glyde and his friend Count Fosco were masters of deception and they’d do everything they can to get the things they want. In the story, Glyde was already in financial difficulties when he married Laura who was from a rich family. In order to get her family’s riches he’s willing to resort to desperate means. Glyde is portrayed here as an archetypical villain which every reader of this book will surely hate.
When it was first published in 1859, The Woman in White quickly became a best-seller because of its theme and storyline. More than a hundred years since its first publication, readers can still relate to its characters and empathize with the protagonists in the story.

  • Kick in The Creatives PodcastArts 6 May

Kick in The Creatives Podcast - We talk Creativity, Art and Writing with Creative Challenges and Gossip

Tara and Sandra, met by happy accident. Tara had been listening to a Podcast that Sandra just happened to be being interviewed on, and having her own podcast at the time, she invited Sandra to be a guest. The two of them quickly hit it off and went on chatting, long after the recording had stopped… And they haven’t shut up since!
Tara was a whizz at idea generation, but having been a graphic designer for 25 years, she had long lost her connection with a ‘real’ pencil.
Sandra, on the other hand, was and still is, a realism painter, yet she had the inability to just ‘let go’ in her sketchbook.
Over the following weeks, they began setting each other creative challenges.
As a result, Tara rekindled her love for drawing by hand, and Sandra horrified to be handed a ‘chunky marker’ to draw with by Tara, was forced to let go of her pedantic sketching style and just ‘have fun in her sketchbook.’
It was clear that the two of them as a duo, were a good influence on each other and having finally met in the flesh, they became firm friends.
Knowing the power that creative challenges had held for them, they decided that they wanted to help other people find and embrace their creative side and just ‘have a go.’

  • A Study in ScarletArts, Fiction 18 Jul 2022

A Study in Scarlet is a detective mystery novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, introducing his new characters, "consulting detective" Sherlock Holmes and his friend and chronicler, Dr. John Watson, who later became two of the most famous characters in literature.

Conan Doyle wrote the story in 1886, and it was published the following year. The book's title derives from a speech given by Holmes to Doctor Watson on the nature of his work, in which he describes the story's murder investigation as his "study in scarlet": "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colorless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." (A "study" is a preliminary drawing, sketch or painting done in preparation for a finished piece.)

  • TWO STOPS OVER is a podcast about filmmaking with two ruffians, director Nigel Dick and cinematographer Vance Burberry ASC, ACS. They have travelled the world together and independently, shooting hundreds and hundreds of music videos, movies and commercials and, in Vance's case, a lot of fish. Drawing from their film-making experiences over the last three decades these two mischief-makers will interrogate, question and cross-examine a different guest on each episode in their efforts to establish final closure on the time Vance tried to blow off Nigel's leg with a bag of fireworks during a location scout. Guests will include a wide array of reputable peers and friends working in the industry and at least one rock n’ roller who has had it with music videos. Our hosts are based in Los Angeles and, although one is technically a Brit and the other is technically an Aussie, it is hoped that some useful film-making tips and interesting behind-the-scenes gossip will be shared, not to mention passionate discussions about whether the craft service table should include Marmite or Vegemite. You have been warned - and so have their future guests!

Two Stops Over is produced by Milktmade.
