Mr. Andrew Paddock Had 10 Always Resided in Vicinity 1 of Three Oaks -Honorable, Industrious and Affable. Andrew H. Paddock was born Jaly 20, -1837, on the old Paddook homestead, in Galena Indiana, where his early. life WaS spent.

He attended school in the old log school house in 3 the vicinity of the present Banker Hill school. When young man he attended school for one year in Niles, Mich. After this he taught school for two years; one year at Avery, and the other at Bunker Hill, his own neighborhood school. In 1860 Mr. Paddock was married to Mary Ellen Ray, and to this anion 71 were born two children: Schuyler 0.

and Evilela, the latter dying in infancy, and the wife passing away in the spring of 1864. On the 9th of February, 1885, Mr. Paddock married Elizabeth K. Butler and two years later they moved to the homestead which has been the family residence ever since. At the time of their coming, there were only, fourteen acres cleared and no buildings on the place.

The present comfortable home shows: the result of years of patient toil and indastry. Here were born the three children; Ada E. Williams, Sherman and Bessie K. Paddock, who, with their mother, a and four grandchildren survive the deceased, who after an illness of eight months passed from this life, July 21, 1906, aged 69 years. The funeral service was held at the home Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev.

O. E. Deal, of the Three Oaks Methodist Episcopal church, officiating. Also; Hon. Eugene Davis of Galena in a few paid a high tribute to the departed friend.

Interment took place at Forest Lawn cemetery, where many people went to hear the last sad words spoken over the remains of the pioneer: James Paddock and wife, who was' Tappan, with her mother and two brothers, was one of the first settlers of Galena township, Indiana. He came in 1836 and settled on section thirteen, which is only a short distance igan City and return: Tickets good on trains Nos. 27 and 22. W. A.

Mr. Paddock was a strong, forceable mAn: good husband, father and neighbor, He was the father of eleven children, nine of whom lived to man and womanhood Four of his sons, Thomas, who died many ago; Morrison, Harvey S.

and Irving, served as privates in the Civil war, and two: of them, Irving and Harvey at its close had attained the rank of captain. Irving, who lives three miles west of this village; Stephen who died in this township some years ago; Andrew, the late deceased; Morrison, Harvey Emily Ingersoll and Lusetta Smith, all live in or near the old homestead. Of all the early settlers in this vicinity the family of Mr. Paddock is the only one whose children FOr settled near him' and. remained to this time.

Mr. Paddock was a good farmer, who did all things well and made the "wilderness blossom as the and his children and grandchildren. have followed the example set by him. -H. O.

are found a number, in the second and third grade class, familiar to some of the readers of THE ACORN: Lea Burton, Benton Harbor; Ernsberger, and 1 Belle Strank, Dayton; and Alice Massey, Galien. Inasmuch 88 the applicants- are nearly all fresh from the high schools. the question has arisen as to whether the examinations were extraordinarily severe or the students sadly lacking in the fundamental principals which shoald have been incalcuted in them after twelve years of study. For some time a higher, standard of scholarship for teachers has been the urgent cry. of many of the districts of this vicinity, as well as elsewhere, and hereabouts, too, have the wages been taking an apward course, rendering the demand the more reasonable; yet even now the teachers in some instances are shamefally under- paid, and only a few received the wages they could command in other 6 Bees Fly 'Away.

The Lady Maccabees had another. of their jolly good times yesterday at Michigan City. Not even the rain was allowed to hinder the gathering of "honey" in Lake Shore park. Bees from the hives at Galien and Now Buffalo joined the Three Oaks: 3 swarm in their day's outing. In the party were Mesdames Hill, N.
