The feline was surrendered to the Toronto Humane Society by his owner following the arrival of a baby in that person’s home.

“He’s very well-behaved, but he’s a little nervous at first,” said THS spokesman Lucas Solowey.

“But his gentle nature shines through once he’s comfortable, and once he feels more relaxed, he may rest his head in your hands or indicate that he wants to be pet. He is a little nervous at first in new environments, but once he gets comfortable, he’s down for some play — for some petting. He can be affectionate, yes.”

Because of his advancing years, Solowey does have a chronic kidney issue so he does require a family that would also look after his health needs, including B12 injections.

“I think it’s fairly common in senior cats,” said Solowey. “Charles is looking for a loving and understanding home.”

Previously, Charles was on anti-anxiety medication, but he’s off that for now.

“(Fifteen) is quite old, I’ve heard of cats living til 18 or closer to 20 so he’s still probably got a bit more time to enjoy his golden years with the right family,” said Solowey.

“Despite his age, he still enjoys a little bit of play and appreciates the company of those around him. Charles is the epitome of a loving and gentle senior cat.”

Solowey suggested a family without small children might be best, and “potentially other cats and a relaxed dog. Anyone who can offer and gentle, loving home to him. The ideal home would be calm and offering a caring and comfortable environment for him to live.”

UPDATE: Kiara, a one-year-old female mixed-breed black dog, from March’s Forever Friend column, is still available for adoption.
