Are Svea stoves still made? ›

In 1969, the Svea brand was acquired by Optimus, another Swedish manufacturer of portable stoves, which has continued production of the Svea 123 to the present day.

Svea 123r is a self pressurizing white gas (Coleman Lantern Fuel, Naphtha, Shellite) backpacking stove. The stove's base serves as an integrated fuel tank which can not be refilled on the fly. It holds about 40-60 minutes burn time of fuel.

Camp Stove Burners and BTU

For most people, a two burner stove that puts out around 10,000 BTU's per burner is a good place to start. This allows you to boil water for coffee quickly, while you cook breakfast on the other burner. A stove this size usually maxes out when you're cooking for four people or more.

Sometime between 1952 and 1955, the company, then known as Sievert AB, introduced the 19-ounce Svea 123, the first-ever compact backpacking stove to use white gas. Unlike the kerosene and regular gas used in most backpacking stoves at the time, white gas burns cleaner and packs a slightly higher BTU punch.

This means a 100 gram canister will usually burn for around one hour and based on my usage will comfortably last me 12 days (8 grams per day) when solo hiking. When there's two of us hiking, we work on 7-8 days per canister given the increase in the amount of water we are boiling.

For a solo weekend backpacking trip, a small 100g canister of stove fuel is often enough. As a general guide, you should bring enough fuel to boil one liter of water per person, per meal and factor in your stove's boil time and total burn time.

For most camp stoves, anything over 10,000BTU will be more than enough for your camping trip as that will be enough to cook most meats in a reasonable amount of time and get water boiling. Of course, higher BTU counts up to a certain point are always useful.
